If you are planning to visit the splendid city of Sorrento, you cannot avoid seeing the site of the Baths of Queen Giovanna called in Italian “I Bagni della Regina Giovanna“.
But above all it would be good to recall its history.
The luxurious villa of the Roman aristocracy built a stone’s throw from the cliff occupied almost thirty thousand square meters and its remains still arouse wonder today.
The name is linked to Queen Giovanna D’Angiò, ruler of Naples. It is said of her that between 1371 and 1435 she came to vacation by the sea accompanied by her young lovers with whom she spent time bathing in these waters. Hence the origin of the name “Bagni della Regina Giovanna”.
Indeed, it is an ancient Roman villa called “Il Pollio Felice”, which was thought to belong to an aristocrat from a Pozzuoli family.
A description of the villa was possible thanks to the writings of Stazio, a Roman writer who ensured that this representation reaches our days.
